The core development team has revealed the launch name of the Sentinel blockchain's second major protocol: Sentinel Scout.
Scout, which was referred to only as the Sentinel AI Data Layer until last week, has been in the open community testing since July. In this piece we bring you up to speed with what has been happening with Sentinel and AI, including:
- The latest on new features.
- Exclusive previews shared by the team.
- How Scout has started turning important heads in the industry.
This is a follow-up piece to our coverage of Scout's first phase of community testing in summer. The original article, which includes everything you need to know about the protocol's fundamentals, is available below.
Frontend Preview
Screenshots of Scout's frontend consumer dashboard have been circulated by the team amongst the community. From a design standpoint, the dashboard is in a rudimentary state and may see substantial changes before it sees full public rollout; but the automated data mining process itself is fully functional.
The dashboard preview also contains some fresh tidbits about how the service will work: Data can be returned to the user in either HTML or JSON format.
Scout's nodes, which are hosted on mobile devices and do not sell bandwidth to dVPNs users like regular Sentinel Nodes do, also appear to have received their launch name: They're referred to as Scout Data Miners in recent previews.
Other New Features
Some other new features have been revealed for Scout's web dashboard since mid-summer:
- AI will be used to autosuggest orders based on specific topics.
The team has previously stated that this service will initially be provided by ChatGPT, but that a permissionless alternative will be used once they can find one offering adequate developer tools.
- Tools for "cleaning up" and editing the returned data will be included.
The preview version of the dashboard shown in the last section already contains over one hundred HTML tag presets available for this purpose. The computational resources for this component are provided by longtime Cosmos partner Akash Network.
Launch Branding
When it comes to branding, Sentinel is often forced to straddle a line between seeking mainstream appeal and maintaining the cyberpunk edge which has kept its core community enthralled for over seven years. With the Sentinel Scout name choice, that particular needle appears to have been successfully threaded: Reaction from the community and third-party developers has been overwhelmingly positive.
"Best naming [the project] ever came up with," development contributor and NORSE Labs CEO Alexandr Litreev chimed in when it was revealed last Wednesday. MathNodes CEO freQnik also gave the choice his stamp of approval.
The preview of the alpha dashboard (shown earlier) includes what appears to be Sentinel Scout's new logo, a stylized pair of binoculars inside of the familiar Sentinel shield emblem. The team still appears to be workshopping the logo, so the release version may differ from what you see here.
Referral Program
The team also announced in recent weeks that data requesters who sign up for Sentinel Scout accounts will receive free credits towards a data scraping order.
"In the same way that distributed GPU networks are giving grants and access credits to AI enthusiasts, Sentinel will do the same." -ProjectAutonomy (Sentinel Foundation)
The exact amount of credits will be determined as launch gets closer.
Industry Attention
Sentinel's AI endeavors are still in an under the radar phase. If you don't follow specialist news publications and accounts related to Sentinel, DePIN, or the Cosmos Ecosystem like this one, there's very little chance you've heard of Sentinel Scout.
That's no accident. Scout is in an advanced stage of development and close to full release; but it's still an experimental product which has required extensive testing to bring to maturity. Sentinel has been open about what they're developing, but there hasn't yet been much effort to promote it outside of the community.
That made it all the more impressive that Sentinel Scout (and Sentinel itself) was referred to directly in a recent report published by Binance Research: Navigating Crypto: Industry Map September 2024.
The eighty-nine page report is titled is available to view or download in PDF form at the page below.
It identifies innovative projects within the the blockchain industry and divides them into seven categories (or "verticals"): Infrastructure, DeFi, NFTs, Gaming, "Consumer Crypto," DePIN, and "Real-World Assets." Sentinel is featured in the "Internet" subcategory of the DePIN vertical (page 70).
There are two things we could surmise from this: Either Kennard Low of Binance Research is superb at his job, or Sentinel Scout is already resonating among some important circles. More likely, it's both. Whatever the answer, one thing which we can be certain of is that the word is out when it comes to Sentinel Scout.
